Downton Abbey aired on PBS in America early this year. Being home for the holidays still, my mother and I started watching Downton Abbey. I remember when I was young, Masterpiece Theater use to put me to sleep. The dramas were too slow and complicated for me; however I have grown up and so has Masterpiece. The last few years I’ve been hooked on Masterpiece Mystery!’s Agatha Christy episodes, and Masterpiece Theater’s Cranford. Yet, Downton Abbey hit me like a storm. I would be disappointed when the episodes ended; I would sigh, “Not yet!” I felt like I was part of their world. Although in England the ratings were outstanding and doubled for Masterpiece, I thought of Downton Abbey as mine. Not many young adults will willingly watch PSB. I discussed it only with my mother and my dear friend Lura (who are both not my age). So, it was my secret. Yet, I got the DVDs (for $5 off Ebay), and I had to shared my secret with my roommate, Jessamyn, who enjoyed it very much.
Downton Abbey pulled me in with an emotional storyline and splendid fashion. My secret world of a different time period, and floating dresses.

The drama of the story is simple to start with, but the plot takes many twists. The main conflict in the plot is the fact that Mary the first daughter of Earl Grantham cannot inherit Downton Abbey. The estate and money will be given to Mr. Matthew Crawley, and Mary will have nothing to do with him. The main conflict downstairs is Lord Grantham’s new Valet John Bates is disliked by the other staff members (mostly Tomas and O’Brien). I do not want to spoil anything! The story is addicting, and the characters are easy to connect with.
The time period is set in the 1912 to 1914, which I think is wonderful fashion era. Since the family is rich and has formal dinners –like on the cruise lines, the dresses are part of the show. It is pure eye candy, and I fail to explain the splendor of the fashion. All I know is that I’m in love with the era; I would wear it, daily (I mean I wear Lolita in public, so why not?).
